Currently, I work as the Front-end Lead for ITProTV. Our team is responsible for designing and implementing effective user interfaces plus managing the visuals for the ITProTV band across our websites, videos, and print assets.
As a child, I drew constantly. In grade school, I would spend my class time making drawings for my classmates. I have seen some of those classmates years later and they have told me that they still have those drawings. Before starting in the cabinet industry in 2000, I had been working as a carpenter after graduating from high school in 1995. In 2010 I left the cabinet industry to study in the Digital Media Technology program at Santa Fe College. The first year of the program is centered around graphic design, web design, and photography. After completing this first year I began doing projects for friends and family members. While finishing my degree I began an internship at a tech start-up, MonkeyWish.com. From my internship with MonkeyWish.com, I was hired as the lead designer and within a year I earned the title, creative director.
After my time at MonkeyWish ended I pursued positions at established companies and institutions. At this point in my career, I had some development experience but not quite enough for the roles as a full-time developer. I enjoyed the creative side of design but didn't what to commit to a role solely as a designer. The startup culture at MonkeyWish allowed me the freedom to mix both roles.
Fortunately, none of those opportunities at larger established companies and institutions worked out and I landed a role at ITProTV as the third full-time employee hired. My original responsibilities revolved around marketing and maintaining the WordPress based web application. This role quickly evolved into a full-time developer role as ITProTV grew from zero to 4 million dollars of revenue at the end of the first two years. Over the last year, I moved out of a full-stack developer role to lead the front-end team where I once again get to balance the roles of creative and engineer.
